Accessible Modifications in Assisted Living Facilities

As our senior family members age, safety becomes more of a priority. Even if there aren’t any specific, diagnosable mobility issues, many seniors simply don’t have the physical abilities they once did. Daily activities that have always been taken for granted start to become difficult. You may notice your elderly loved one withdrawing from family and social gatherings out of embarrassment, frustration, or simply depression. Special precautions must be taken to prevent falls and other mishaps.

Once you start to notice these changes in your loved one, you need to make a decision: should you try to perform expensive, time-consuming renovations to keep them at home? Or should you move them to a facility that was designed from the ground up with seniors in mind? At
Heathwood Assisted Living, we believe that moving to assisted living is the right answer for many seniors – and we’ll show you why.

Problems with Aging in Place

Renovating a home to accommodate your loved one’s changing needs is always an option. However, this can be more time, trouble, and expense than you or your loved one is able to take on. Making a home more accessible isn’t simply a matter of adding a rail here and a bar there. All these things must be reinforced for durability and safety, and the structural foundation of the home must also be taken into consideration. That can add up to a whole lot of money and time. Finally, you’ll have to find a reputable contractor in your area to do all of this, and we’re all well-versed in the possible home disasters caused by a poor contractor. Simply put, to help a loved one age in place, you will have to renovate their entire house!

And don’t forget: all the modifications you’ll make may have to be removed in the event you sell the home down the line. This will require you to go through the whole time-consuming renovation process all over again.

Why worry about all that when you don’t have to? There’s an easier way to keep your loved one safe and happy. Move them into Heathwood Assisted Living, where accessibility and safety are there from the start!

Safety and Accessibility Features at Heathwood Assisted Living

Heathwood Assisted Living’s
Penfield and Williamsville locations were built with the needs of seniors in mind. Each facility is designed to allow residents to feel safe and perfectly at home no matter where they go. Here are just a few of the essential features we have built in:

Grab Bars

All bathrooms in Heathwood Assisted Living’s facilities are equipped with grab bars to help our residents navigate the rooms more easily.

Walk-In Showers

Units are available with walk-in showers. This reduces the chance of an accident since residents don’t have to lift their feet in and out of the tub.

Ramps and Handrails

Handrails are located throughout the facilities to give residents added support with balance and to prevent slips and falls.

Accessible Door Handles

The doors at Heathwood Assisted Living’s two locations are equipped with accessible handles to help residents enter and leave rooms more easily.

Robust Security

Other safety measures at Heathwood Assisted Living include a sprinkler system in case of fire, a wander guard system for residents with cognitive issues, alarmed exit doors to prevent unauthorized entry, and a resident call system with pull cords.

Care Tailored to Each Resident’s Needs

During the admissions process, our staff, along with the prospective resident’s primary physician, will evaluate them to determine the proper level of care. Furthermore, should they end up requiring a higher level of care during their stay with us, our case manager will be more than happy to help find a facility that meets their needs. Of course, we’ll always take not only the resident’s medical needs into account when determining this, but also their desired location and financial situation.
